The latest project from the producers behind the Twilight franchise is - in a complete change of direction from teen fantasy - a film about Hillary Clinton’s life.

Titled Rodham, the former US Secretary of State’s maiden name, the script is by Young Il Kim and dramatizes the Democrat and former First Lady’s early career in the 1970s.

Scornfully described by one American newspaper as Hillary Clinton: The Chick Flick, the screenplay follows her struggle as a young woman torn between a high powered career as a lawyer in the House Judiciary Committee and her feelings for a man named Bill Clinton who is teaching law in Arkansas and harbouring political ambitions.

Young Il Kim said in an interview that he was inspired by a photo of Clinton “when she was in her 20s with Coke-bottle glasses and long, hippie hair”.

The film, in development by Temple Hill Entertainment with Twilight’s Wyck Godfrey and Marty Bowen producing, is billed as part romance, part political drama set against the backdrop of the Watergate scandal.

James Ponsoldt (The Spectacular Now, Smashed) has been confirmed to direct the film, but casting for Bill and Hilary is yet to be announced.
