The first trailer for Sausage Party has landed, a film billed as the ‘first R-rated CG animated movie’ whose cast includes Paul Rudd, Kristen Wiig, James Franco, Jonah Hill, Edward Norton, Seth Rogan and Michael Cera.

Created by Rogen and collaborated Evan Goldberg, the movie takes the familiar Pixar setup of a group of sentient items - in this case food stuffs - but imagines them trying to avoid being brutally dismembered for use as ingredients.

It’s gleefully surreal and silly, the trailer at one point seeing a bagel voiced by Edward Norton shout: “Run for your fucking lives!”

Sausage Party gets a work-in-progress screening at SXSW this week, where Rogen and Goldberg are also showing their new AMC drama, Preacher.

Official synopsis from Columbia Pictures:

'“Sausage Party” is an ‘R’ rated theatrical animated movie about one sausage’s quest to discover the truth about his existence. After falling out of a shopping cart, our hero sausage and his new friends embark on a perilous journey through the supermarket to get back to their aisles before the 4th of July sale.'

Sausage Party hits cinemas on 12 August.
