Joseph Gordon-Levitt is officially a dead ringer for NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden, as first look pictures from Oliver Stone’s new movie prove.

The Inception actor is seen dressed in army uniform with a determined expression on his face in the photo from Snowden, due for US release in December.

Gordon-Levitt posted the image on his official Facebook page, with another behind-the-scenes shot of director Stone pulling a silly pose as he works on his twentieth movie.

Snowden follows the former CIA employee’s life before and after his leaking of thousands of classified documents to the press in 2013. He enlisted in the army in 2004 with the intention of fighting in Iraq, but broke both legs during basic training and was discharged, Gordon-Levitt said in the photo caption.

“After that, he was still determined to serve his country,” he wrote. “Love him or hate him, you gotta admit the guy’s strong-willed.”

Based on The Snowden Files: The Inside Story of the World’s Most Wanted Man by Luke Harding, the storyline sees Snowden seek refuge in Russia after going on the run from the US government.

Zachary Quinto, Nicolas Cage and Divergent's Shailene Woodley also star in Snowden, alongside Melissa Leo, Rhys Ifans, Scott Eastwood, Tom Wilkinson and Timothy Olyphant.

It is yet to be confirmed when Snowden will reach UK cinemas.
