The first teaser trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens dropped today, showing off new droids, new spacecraft and a new Sith lightsaber.

The teaser was surprisingly revealing, featuring many real scenes from the film, with John Boyega playing a stranded Stormtrooper and Adam Driver (?) stalking through a forest in a black cloak.

It was the item in his right hand that got fans talking the most on Twitter - a red lightsaber with a beam crossguard.

The general consensus was that it looked pretty cool, albeit a safety hazard with the crossguard surely only serving to sever the wielder's fingers.

Anticipation was huge for the teaser, which debuted through iTunes though it crashed for many users as people clicked in their thousands.

JJ Abrams cautioned that the teaser would be "tiny", but has served up plenty for the forums to theorise over.

A new spherical drone was also seen, rolling along Tatooine, while X-Wings skimmed an ocean and the Millennium Falcon chased down TIE Fighters.

"There has been an awakening, have you felt it?" an apparent villain says during the trailer. "The Dark Side and the light."

Star Wars: The Force Awakens opens in cinemas on 18 December 2015.
