The hype for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story was tarnished slightly this week by reports that a substantial amount of it is going to be reshot, and now we have a better idea of just how substantial the reshoot will be and the reasons behind it.

Making Star Wars, a reliable source of Star Wars production news, claims that when they asked a few crew members what was being reshot, they laughed and said "everything".

They may have been joking, but the site claims as much as 40% of the film will be redone, the cast and crew working 6 days a week for 8 weeks on 32 recreated sets.

Reshoots are commonplace for big budget, big expectation movies like this, but are rarely this extensive.

There have been rumours that it's all down to tonal shifts - Disney wanting the movie to feel lighter - and the need to interpolate a cameo from Alden Ehrenreich's young Han Solo, but Making Stars claims it's down to an overhaul of the script.

'Christopher McQuarrie, the final writer on Rogue One will be working extensively with Edwards onset to make sure they’re on the “same page” with the most recent draft of the film,' it reports, McQuarrie's draft apparently being "considered superior to the film they shot previously."

'It was not Edwards’ fault as McQuarrie’s draft wasn’t completed when much of the film was shot and revisions kept coming in that made the film feel uneven.'

It seems bizarre that Disney/Lucasfilm went steaming ahead with a sub-standard script in the first place, but I guess that's what happens when you try and fire out a Star Wars movie every single year until at least 2020.

This is all ultimately good news though, and the studios are clearly committed to making sure the film is the best it can be, even if it comes at great expense.
