As production continues to roll on long-awaited Stephen King adaptation The Dark Tower, the first photo of Matthew McConaughey as villainous character Randall Flagg has surfaced.

The photos, taken on the film's temporary New York set, shows the Oscar-winning actor dressed in black, a trademark of the character that appears in multiple Stephen King novels.

McConaughey stars in The Dark Tower alongside Idris Elba who will assume the role The Gunslinger (AKA Roland Deschain).

Abbey Lee will appear as the film's female lead having previously starred in Mad Max: Fury Road and new Nicolas Winding Refn film The Neon Demon.

Swedish filmmaker Nikolaj Arcel (A Royal Affair) is directing from a script written by Akiva Goldsman (A Beautiful Mind) and Jeff Pinkner (The Amazing Spider-Man 2).

The adaptation has seen a tumultuous journey to screen ever since an announcement was made back in 2008 with both JJ Abrams and Ron Howard attached to direct.

A new version of Stephen King's It has begun production with Bill Skarsgård taking on the role of Pennywise the clown.

The Dark Tower will be released 17 February 2017.
