The clip, which premiered at the awards’ pre-show in Los Angeles, sees the two lead teenager characters arguing about smoking.

Based on the popular novel by John Green, the movie follows 16-year-old cancer patient Hazel Grace (Shailene Woodley) who meets and falls in love with a boy called Augustus (Ansel Elgort) at her cancer support group.

In the clip, Augustus gets out a cigarette and asks lung cancer patient Hazel Grace if she would like one.

Hazel Grace gets angry, telling love interest Augustus: “That’s disgusting. What, do you think that’s cool, or something? You’ve just ruined the whole thing.”

But Augustus has the last word, telling Hazel Grace the cigarette was a “metaphor” and he never intended to smoke one.

“I never lit one,” he says. “It’s a metaphor – you put the thing that does the killing right between your teeth but you never give it the power to kill you.”

The Fault In Our Stars is due for release in the UK on 20 June.
