A two and a half minute first trailer for Baz Luhrmann’s highly anticipated film adaptation of The Great Gatsby has been released.

Starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Carey Mulligan and Tobey Maguire, Luhrmann’s take on F Scott Fitzgerald’s seminal 1925 novel looks like a big budget affair, with lavish costumes and set design.

Opening with glamorous visuals of New York’s 1920s party scene, the trailer is soundtracked by Kanye West and Jay Z’s song ‘No Church in the Wild’.

Set in 1922, the film is told from the perspective of Nick Carraway (Maguire), whose arrival in Long Island sees him swept up in the extravagant party world of his next-door neighbour – the mysterious Jay Gatsby (DiCaprio). The friendship eventually leads Gatsby to recruit the help of Carraway to win back the affections of Daisy Buchanan – Gatsby’s ex-girlfriend and, Carraway’s cousin.

The Greats Gatsby has previously been adapted into a film in 1926, 1949 and 1974, with a film for television made in 2000 and an opera adaptation in 1999.

Luhrmann’s version was shot in his native Australia and will be released on Boxing Day.
