Review of Being Human: ‘Being Human 1955’

Following on from an episode tinged with tragedy, this week lifted the mood with something lighter.

Golden Globe nominee Robin Wright Penn and
Gossip Girl’s Blake Lively head an all-star cast including, Alan Arkin, Keanu Reeves, Winona Ryder and Julianne Moore, in
The Private Lives of Pippa Lee, available on DVD for the first time from 2 November.

Robin Wright Penn is luminous in the central role as Pippa Lee, the beautiful, charming but unknowable heroine of gifted writer-director Rebecca Miller’s beautifully rendered adaptation of her own novel.

A woman in the prime of life, from all outward appearances, Pippa Lee leads a charmed existence. An anchor of feminine serenity, she is the devoted wife of an accomplished and charismatic publisher thirty years her senior, the proud mother of two grown up children, and a trusted friend and confidant to all who cross her path. When her husband turns 80, the couple move out of their luxury home in New York to a retirement community in Connecticut where they plan to spend their remaining years together in quiet comfort.

But inside, the enigmatic Pippa Lee is unravelling and is tired of the constraints placed on her by her perfect but staid existence. Tell tale happenings reveal that she is clearly more complex than the face she presents to the world, and through a series of flash backs we learn that she was not always the poised and elegant woman she is now.

With beautiful simplicity, Miller slowly begins to unravel Pippa’s past and to celebrate the stirrings of something new within her as she embarks on a bittersweet journey of self-discovery, along with help from a new, strange and soulful acquaintance (Keanu Reaves). Pippa must confront both her volatile past and the hidden undercurrents of her seemingly placid world to find the true sense of self which has always eluded her.

The Private Lives of Pippa Lee is a sharp, witty and moving portrait of the many lives behind a single name.

To celebrate the release of the DVD we have 15 copies of the DVD to giveaway.
