20th Century Fox have kept details regarding the upcoming X-Men film, Apocalypse, to a minimum, so when new information does emerge it’s a pretty big deal.

The latest details, however, have come from a very unsuspecting source: an M&M’s press release. Yes, we’re talking about the same company who produce those “colourful button-shaped chocolates.”

While no massive spoilers are revealed, the press release featured the first semi-official synopsis of the mutant film.

It reads: “Since the dawn of civilisation, he was worshiped as a god. Apocalypse, the first and most powerful mutant from Marvel’s X-Men universe, amassed the powers of many other mutants, becoming immortal and invincible.

“Upon awakening after thousands of years, he is disillusioned with the world as he finds it and recruits a team of powerful mutants, including a disheartened Magneto (Michael Fassbender), to cleanse mankind and create a new world order, over which he will reign.

“As the fate of the Earth hangs in the balance, Raven (Jennifer Lawrence) with the help of Professor X (James McAvoy) must lead a team of young X-Men to stop their greatest nemesis and save mankind from complete destruction.”

The film will be the ninth in the X-Men series - including The Wolverine - and is the third in the prequel series. It will be set in 1983, a decade after the events in X-Men: Days of Future Past.

X-Men: Apocalypse will be released in cinemas on 16 May 2016.
