A father and son compete at holding their breath underwater at the pool they attend to at a luxury hotel in Chad.
There's clearly a strong love between them. However, the hotel is about to be taken over by a Chinese firm, meaning many staff will lose their jobs or be reassigned. Adam is turfed out of his job in favour of his son, Abdel, despite his pleas that the "pool is my whole life". This former swimming champion is demoted to gatekeeper, and forced to sport a shabby suit that's too small for him. This proud 55-year-old feels diminished, demeaned. First he shuns his son, and then allows – by not paying his dues to the local enforcer – the government's forces to draft his only child into the civil war with the rebels. A powerful, harrowing experience.Reuse content
