The Coen brothers' first masterpiece, their neo-noir 1983 debut (above), relies on its lead characters explaining diddly-squat to each other.

If only they spoke up, they wouldn't be in this blood-soaked mess. Frances McDormand and John Getz play the Texan lovers, and the reptilian Dan Hedaya plays the wronged husband who hires a corrupt private eye (M Emmet Walsh, stupendous) to bump them off. A dark, muggy and just plain mean tragedy.
