"I don't understand him, I never have," grumbles Raymond Massey about his son Cal in melodrama East of Eden. James Dean, in his brief film career, specialised in highly strung, misunderstood teens who slouched, drawled and kicked the dust, abstractedly. Method acting, of course, and Dean remains a compelling, scene-stealing presence. His crowning achievement was his volatile delinquent in Rebel Without a Cause, but his most layered performance was as a damaged oil tycoon in the soapy Giant.
