Steven Spielberg's Lincoln (AP)

Spielberg's reverential, verbose drama (pictured) expertly depicts the horse-trading, threats and charm required to persuade the House of Representatives to pass the contentious 13th Amendment.

Tony Kushner's script is sharp and convincing, the announcement of the monumental vote suitably stirring and the acting – particularly from Lewis, Jones and Field – excellent.
