Back in 1989, Hal Hartley's highly stylised brand of independent US cinema looked and sounded like nothing else. Does this auteur's droll drama hold up now? Unexpectedly, yes.

Adrienne Shelly plays a nuclear-war-fixated teen, bored by her small town and her boyfriend, who is taken by Robert Burke's mysterious mechanic, Josh, who gets a job working for her highly strung father. But is Josh a mass murderer? This remains an unusual, small-budget treat.
