Diablo Cody's scabrous, jet-black comedy is very nearly a sensational American satire.
It centres on Mavis (Charlize Theron, excellent), a 37-year-old, alcoholic writer of teen fiction who goes into meltdown when she spots an old flame's baby posted online. She promptly makes her way back to her miserable hometown (this film, unlike so many others, has zero affection for hometowns) to wreck Patrick Wilson's blandly perfect marriage to Beth (Elizabeth Reaser). Very funny in places, excruciating in others, Young Adult is a bold look at failure.
