Gus Van Sant's heartfelt, fast-moving biopic depicts Harvey Milk's progression from closeted New York stockbroker to campaigning San Francisco demagogue to America's first openly gay elected official in 1978.

Sean Penn deserved his Oscar for submerging himself so completely in the title role. He radiates Milk's optimism and vulnerability, but also the steely ambition that could alienate boyfriends and political adversaries alike.
