It may not be Curb Your Enthusiasm but Modern Family, which adopts the kind of awkward, quasi-documentary style popularised by Larry David's cult comedy – still guarantees plenty of laughs.

Favouring the kind of feel-good comedy that propelled Gavin & Stacey to success (only in this instance with real jokes) the portrait of life in the American 'burbs revolves around a few "modern families", cracking jokes at their fumbling interaction. There's the gay couple who have adopted, the multicultural step-family, and the archetypal picket fencers complete with "cool dad." Think Outnumbered meets The Office: it's not going to challenge your intellect, but it will make you smile.
