Three films from this pioneer of American indie and each reveals a different side to Hartley's oeuvre.

Trust is a darkly comic romance of an arch loner and a pregnant teen outcast; Henry Fool is an entertaining disquisition on writing; and The Girl from Monday, set in a future where bodies are commodities, reveals his arch-stylist side. All are more interesting than modern blockbusters – though Henry Fool is a half-hour too long and "Monday" is over-stylised to the point of grating.
