Steven Soderbergh tries to turn this true story of corporate whistle-blowing into an offbeat comedy caper, complete with a swinging retro store, a stream-of-consciousness voice-over, and Matt Damon with an unflattering moustache.

It seems that he doesn't trust the material to stand up without a scaffolding of postmodern gimmickry, whereas the film is at its best in its later stretches, when he strips away the larky embellishments and lays out the mind-boggling truth.
