DVD: The Nicolas Philibert Collection (12)
Friday 01 July 2011
The standout here is the ineffably lovely Être et Avoir, Philibert's documentary which charts the infinitely patient Monsieur Georges Lopez's final year of teaching in a village primary school in the Auvergne region.
The other four documentaries are a tad less life-affirming, but still beautifully observed. Nénette gazes at a "gentle and calm" 40-year-old orangutan through the glass screen of her zoo cell. Nénette has clearly lost the will to entertain her public: "She is drained of curiosity," a zoo worker says. Back to Normandy, about an old homicide case, La Ville Louvre and Un Animal, Des Animaux complete this engrossing collection.
