DVD: The No 1 Ladies' Detective Agency (12A)
In this made-for-TV adaptation of Alexander McCall Smith's novel, tastefully directed by the late Anthony Minghella, the Botswanan countryside provides a backdrop as rich and expansive as the characters.
Writers Richard Curtis and Minghella draw out a playful, engaging tale of a lady who uses her inheritance to establish herself as the country's first female detective. Some critics called the film twee, but a vivacious cast help bring to life a plot which seems, at points, schematic, if not afraid to tackle difficult issues. A fitting finale to a great directorial career.
