The first 45 minutes of Spielberg's lavishly mounted adaptation of Michael Morpurgo's novel have all the bite of an episode of Heartbeat.

It's only when Tom Hiddleston's First World War captain recruits Albert's beloved farm horse, Joey, for the Western Front that this soppy tale kicks in. Young Albert enlists in order to find Joey, while his equine pal bears witness to horrors. The cloying score hinders this stirring epic, but the no-man's-land scene is beautifully done.
