The hype and awards have slightly diminished the impact of Hazanavicius's adroit homage to Hollywood's silent era, and the first 20 minutes are a bit so-what-ish, but then, suddenly, everything – the acting, the melodramatic score, the dog (Uggie), the gorgeous faded black-and-white look – kicks in.

Jean Dujardin is superb as self-important silent-movie icon George Valentin, whose career hits the skids when the talkies arrive, and Bérénice Bejo is captivating as the rising star. However, devoted Uggie steals the show.
