Jar City (15)
The burden of this Icelandic procedural thriller will put a chill in your bones, if the lugubrious, wind-whipped coastal setting hasn't done already.
A gruffly stoical police detective (Ingvar Eggert Sigurdsson) investigates a homicide that may be linked to the death of a young girl, 30 years earlier. Meanwhile, a father mourning the loss of his five-year-old daughter from a rare brain disease discovers a horrible family secret. The sorrows of parenthood – the cop himself has a junkie daughter – are convincingly limned against a backdrop of grey Icelandic light, male-voice choirs and desolate roads.
Icelandic food looks pretty desolate, too: the sight of a man chewing on a sheep's head for his supper will not be easily forgotten.
