The Great Museum, film review: Perspectives and insights no normal visitor would ever receive

(PG) Johannes Holzhausen, 94 mins

This year alone, there have been documentaries about Amsterdam’s Rijksmuseum, St Petersburg’s Hermitage Museum and London’s National Gallery.

Now, we have a film about Vienna’s celebrated Kunsthistorisches Museum, which is undergoing renovations and facing cutbacks. In its own quiet, slow-burning way, the film is absorbing.

Like the other recent museum documentaries, it offers us perspectives and insights that no normal visitor to the galleries would ever receive.
