We Are The Freaks, film review: Inventively shot coming-of-age drama has plenty of energy

(15) Justin Edgar, 72 mins Starring: Jamie Blackley,  Mike Bailey, Sean Teale, Michael Smiley

Justin Edgar's inventively shot, 1990-set coming-of-age drama has plenty of energy and is attractively performed by its leads – three germ-filled adolescents on the cusp of adult life.

At its best, the film plays like a more abrasive British riposte to the John Hughes teen movies that it references.

The downside is the random plotting, the feeble jokes about the sexual attractiveness of Margaret Thatcher and the nagging feeling that the film-makers, like their protagonists, aren’t at all sure where they are going or why.
