Weekly US film releases: Drew Barrymore and ‘Avatar’s Special Edition’

On August 27, an action film, romantic comedy and horror film hit US theaters with Avatar returning for a limited time with new footage.

An action story focused on an ace New York City detective pitted against a group of bank robbers planning a $20 million heist. The ensemble cast co-stars Matt Dillon ( Crash, Y ou, Me & Dupree), Paul Walker ( Fast & Furious), Idris Elba ( RocknRolla), Zoe Saldana ( Avatar, The Losers), rapper T.I., and R&B singer Chris Brown. Rolls out around the world through November.

Going the Distance
This romantic-comedy stars Drew Barrymore ( Whip It) and Justin Long ( Alvin and the Chipmunks: the Squeakquel) in a story about a couple attempting a long-distance relationship. Releases in several international markets in September and Japan in October.

The Last Exorcism
A horror film following a troubled minister who lets his exorcism be filmed by a documentary crew. With Tony Bentley ( Cadillac Records, The Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans) and Ashley Bell as the possessed. http://www.thelastexorcism.com/index.html

Also this weekend:
Avatar: Special Edition, James Cameron's sci-fi epic in 3D has a limited re-release with nine extra minutes of never-seen-before footage.

Flipped, a period romantic-comedy with Rebecca De Mornay ( Wedding Crashers) and Aidan Quinn ( Empire Falls) and directed by Rob Reiner ( The Bucket List) opens wide.

Centurion, a swords and sandals action film starring Michael Fassbinder ( Inglourious Basterds) and Dhaffer L'Abidine ( Sex and the City 2) has a limited opening.
