Gardening: BULBS FOR CHILDREN

Getting children interested in gardening is a difficult trick to pull. The earthy romance of damp soil and the slow rhythms of the changing seasons are delights that we often only appreciate as we ripen and mature ourselves. Unwins have tackled this by introducing a range called "Bulbs 4 Kids" - in child-friendly packs decorated with cartoon characters - to sell alongside the popular "Seeds 4 Kids" range they launched last year.

The bulbs are common varieties of narcissi, tulips, snakeshead fritillaries, croci and Stars of Bethlehem. Hyacinth bulbs come with their own glass container, so that children can watch the roots develop in water.
