LAST YEAR we launched a new photography prize: the John Kobal Photographic Portrait Award, in memory of the man whose enthusiasm for the photo portrait - particularly Hollywood portraits of the Thirties, Forties and Fifties - built up one of the largest collections in the world. John Kobal died in 1991; but before he died he appointed a group of friends to administer a charitable foundation and asked that an international photographic portrait award should be given annually in his name. Thus, in 1993, the newly established John Kobal Foundation, together with the Independent on Sunday, announced the award of pounds 5,000 which would be divided between the winners at the judges' discretion.

We received almost 2,500 entries last year. The standard was extremely high and, in the end, because the pictures had been so good, and the entries so numerous, the judges awarded seven prizes in all: pounds 3,000 to the winner, pounds 500 to each of the four runners up, and two extra commendations of pounds 250 each.

Today, we are inviting entries for the second John Kobal Photographic Portrait Award from photographers, professional and amateur, who were 18 before the end of 1993. The rules are given in detail below, but for the purposes of this award, 'portrait' may be interpreted in its widest sense, of photography concerned with portraying people with an emphaisis on their identity as individuals. Entries should be submitted by 31 March 1994.

Before we launched the award last year, the Zelda Cheatle Gallery was already committed to exhibiting the 60 best entries, following the winners' reception given by the National Portrait Gallery. The Angela Flowers Gallery also exhibited a further selection. This year, because of the high standard of the pictures, the National Portrait Gallery has decided to host the award and exhibit the best entries as part of their 1994 programme. The Kobal show at the National Portrait Gallery, St Martin's Lane, WC2, will run from 25 May to 26 June. The award has also received additional and generous sponsorship from Finnemore & Field, whose graphic designers have taken over the design of posters, entry leaflets and the exhibition catalogue for the award.

Details of how to enter for this year's John Kobal Award appear below.
