Letter: Cutting emissions

Sir: So the experts think it is now too late to do anything about the greenhouse effect (report, 16 September)? There is one simple measure we could adopt which would stop a lot of carbon being liberated into the atmosphere: pass a law requiring homeowners to plant at least one extra tree in their gardens, and making it an offence to cut their lawns or trim their hedges. And imagine how much quieter Sundays will be once lawnmowers have been banned!
