Letter: Darwin's legacy
Sir: James Willis (letter, 9 September) says that, while Darwin "told us what we are, where we came from, and how we got here," what we don't know is "why"; and he adds that this is "a question of a completely different kind". In fact it is a non-question, because any attempt to answer it - with such explanations as life force or divine creation or universal will - leads to further questions, such as "What do you mean?", "How do you know?" and yet another "Why?"
