Letter: Eclipse tranquillity

Sir: Congratulations to James Dalrymple for his breathtaking account of the eclipse ("Like a magician, nature presented 120 seconds of breathtaking beauty", 12 August).

What a pity, though, that he categorically declared there was "no mystery" in it, and that it was a "simple" demonstration of nature's power and precision.

What a pity his imagination and his curiosity stopped short of asking who or what was the "master magician", and who or what set the "clockwork of the universe" going.
