Sir: The Academy Award nomination of Emily Watson for best actress does indeed give the lie to recent pessimism about the British film industry. What a pity it doesn't put a stop to the unthinking condemnation of Lottery- financed films (Leading article, 10 February).

The Lottery was a major contributor to Hilary and Jackie. Other successes for Lottery-financed films include awards from the Cannes Film Festival, Evening Standard British Film Awards and the Edinburgh International Film Festival.
