Sir: Howard Jacobson (Weekend Review, 19 June) described today's youth as having no appreciation for an occasion such as a Bar Mitzvah. My contemporaries and I had our Bar and Bat Mitzvahs about four years ago and we all appreciated the occasion as a religious honour marking our responsibility towards our faith. I know of nobody who giggled through it. All the Bar/Bat Mitzvahs I have attended were conducted in a way befitting an important milestone in the life of a young Jew, boy or girl.
