Sir: Ministers should reject the proposal that a hunting ban could be watered down into a mere code of conduct (report, 4 August). The suggestion that only the most offensive aspects of this blood sport could be outlawed is ridiculous. Badger baiting, cock-fighting and organised dogfights are already illegal, but the authorities are unable to stamp them out because of lack of evidence. Would police accompany every hunt to ensure compliance with a code of conduct?
