Letter: Misconception
Sir: Deborah Orr needs a bit of help with her theology (Comment, 10 December). When she writes about "that immaculate conception act" of the mother of Jesus, she is mistaking it for the virgin birth. The dogma of the Immaculate Conception was promulgated by the Papacy in l854 and refers to the belief that the Virgin Mary was free from the taint of original sin. Even the faithful sometimes make the same mistake.
