Sir: In the spirit of fairness it should be remembered that it was Chile who rescued Shackleton's men from Elephant Island in 1917. Shackleton had to leave them there while he and five others set off in a lifeboat to sail the perilous 800 miles to South Georgia for help.

After four failed attempts, the Chilean steamer Yelcho, under the command of Captain Luis Pardo, broke through the pack-ice to reach the stranded crew of the Endurance.
