Sir: A few days ago I was looking through my fiction shelves and I pulled out a volume of short stories by E M Forster. Almost instinctively I found the story which I read when I was in my early twenties, The Machine Stops. Reading it again now as the century draws to a close, and as anxieties about the millennium bug quietly increase, made me wonder why, in those youthful days, I thought it was a marvellous piece of science fiction.
