Sir: Your editorial comment, "John Hume must help clear the way for a Unionist Yes" (12 July), deserves support.
At the SDLP's annual conference last autumn , Seamus Mallon said that he did not believe that Sinn Fein would fail to honour their commitment to decommission within the two-year period specified in the Good Friday Agreement, "but no one should have any doubt that if it did, the SDLP would rigorously enforce the terms of the agreement and remove from office those who had so blatantly dishonoured their obligations".
John Hume's recent remarks seem to cast doubt on that commitment. He should make it clear that it still stands.
