You won't have to sit in the Royal Enclosure at Ascot next week to experience the joys of wearing a silly hat. Take a stroll down your local high street in a pink, frothy lampshade (Fred Bare will oblige) or a neat, acid-yellow trilby (courtesy of Herbert Johnson's hatter, Prudence, who also makes hats for Vivienne Westwood) and strange things will happen to you. Dogs will bark, cyclists will veer uncontrollably, and you will find yourself wondering, "Is it the hat?" Photographs by Gavin Bond
