Nervous doubts of "Am I fit enough?" and adrenalin-fuelled excitement to get going guarantee an electrifying buzz at the start line.

Others are just starting out on personal missions to hone and tone, while many newfound joggers are simply keen to be able to run for longer than five minutes without getting a stitch.

As music is a great motivator, many runners complile an iPod playlist to give them a boost as breathing gets harder and legs start to ache.
