Caught in the Net: The a cappella treatment

By Larry Ryan

Rocco Privetera, a comedy performer, recently turned out an odd a cappella cover version of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs' "Maps".

Rocco Privetera, a comedy performer, recently turned out an odd a cappella cover version of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs' "Maps". With wondrous feats of vocal dexterity, the beguiling effort can be seen on Privetera's website, www.privetera.com.

His video is also featured on the Yeah Yeah Yeahs' MySpace page, www.my space.com/yeahyeahyeahs, alongside a stream of the original ballad.

While there, you can hear the band's take on The Ramones' "Sheena Is a Punk Rocker" for the recent 'War Child: Heroes' album and their new single "Zero". The latter is from their confidently titled third LP, 'It's Blitz!', due out on 13 April.

Meanwhile, "Heads Will Roll", also from the album, can be downloaded for free from Kayne West's blog at http://tinyurl.com/ajvsem. Both songs see the trio largely jettisoning the crunching guitars for house beats, old-school synths and a new wave electro feel. They seem intent on sending Sheena and the punk rockers to the dance floor, with Karen O commanding on the latter track: "Dance, dance, dance 'till you're dead."

Burial is back
Little has been heard from dubstep's leading light, Burial, since the secretive producer revealed his identity to the world via his MySpace page (www.myspace.com/burialuk) in August. Last Friday, however, Kode9, the DJ, producer and founder of the Hyperdub label, which releases his music, appeared on Benji P's "underground soul" radio show on BBC1 Xtra. During an hour of music from Hyperdub, Kode9 played two untitled and unfinished Burial tracks – hear the show at http://tinyurl.com/ 2bye36. The tracks appear roughly at the 1:32 mark and at 1:40. Both have Burial's distinctive sound, but the first in particular displays some interesting developments.

Summer's here
Releasing an album called 'Summer Palace' in February seems premature, but London-based Sunny Day Sets Fire's (left) debut CD of grand psychedelic pop came out on Monday; they launch it with a gig tonight at Café Oto, Dalston. Hear tracks at http://www.myspace. com/officialsunnydaysetsfire.

Still waiting for Dr Dre's next
Rap fans have waited almost a decade for a new Dr Dre album. 'Detox' is said to be the name of that record. It's expected this year, though no firm date has been given, so don't hold your breath. Last week, a track, believed to be from the album, was leaked. Featuring TI and Nas, it's called "Topless" and can be heard at http://tinyurl.com/c2svap and http://tinyurl.com/az65fm, among other places – though some pesky lawyers might demand it be taken down.

Name game
A fad sweeping the web creates fictitious album covers. Buzzfeed.com explains further (http://tinyurl.com /d74f6v): "Go to Wikipedia. Hit 'random' and the first article is the name of your band. Then go to 'Random Quotations' [www.quotationspage. com] and the last five words of the last quote is the title of your first album. Then, go to Flickr and click on 'Explore the Last Seven Days', the third picture will be your album cover." I did it and acquired the stage name, 'John Barber (engineer)', an album called 'Whether I Win or Lose', and a woman's legs perched by water for the cover. They give the impression of a singer who would be billed as the "next Bon Ivor".
