Music And Me: Tim Burgess of The Charlatans

Tim Burgess was talking to Charlotte Cripps

The first record I bought was...

"Like Clockwork" by The Boomtown Rats. I was on a high street in Northwich, Cheshire where I spent most of my youth. I was about 10.

The first gig I went to was...

A proper gig? I remember going to see a band called The Subhumans - a second generation UK punk band. I was a young punk.

My favourite record is...

Power, Corruption and Lies by New Order. I started to change from being a punk fan into something that was a little more post-punk.

But my parents always liked...

My dad always liked "Frigging in the Rigging" by the Sex Pistols.

I couldn't marry someone...

Whose favourite band was Jamiroquai.

On stage I like to wear...

Tight trousers like The Beatles. I went through a baggy trousers phase like Madness.

I'd love to perform with...

Paris Hilton - not really. It would be Bob Dylan and Karen O of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.

One thing that must change in the music industry is...

It would be good for people to get some passion back. You might not be the biggest selling artist in the world but at least make records for the right reasons.

A great album cover is...

All The Beatles album covers, particularly Rubber Soul, with the four of them in front of a green tree. I really like pictures of bands on the cover. For me I identify with the music - but also the look is important to identify with a band. I like the cover of Elephant by the White Stripes with the two of them sitting down together.

On my iPod I listen most to...

I don't actually have an iPod. I have an iBook G4. It's the record "Bag A Wire Dub" by King Tubby.

If I could have written any song it would have been...

It changes all the time. "Bang Bang You're Dead" by Dirty Pretty Things just for Carl [Barat]. Or "My Generation" by The Who or "Out in the Streets" by the Shangri-Las.

The worst song I have heard...

I try to close my head to anything that violates my eardrums. Anything by T'Pau - particularly that awful song "China in your Hand".
