My Fantasy Band - Scroobius Pip, Dan Le Sac Vs Scroobius Pip
Friday 25 June 2010
Vocals - Johnny Hartman
There has never been a voice that can sooth and entrance me quite like Johnny Hartman. The sepia Sinatra (I'm sure he had that name before Billy Eckstine) puts all others to shame. His work with John Coltrane was one of those rare moments where people at the top of their field can put ego aside and combine effortlessly.
Guitar - Prince
This way I get to have Prince in the band AND have another vocalist. I don't feel I really have to explain this one. It's Prince.
Bass - Matt Freeman
He's a member of Operation Ivy and Rancid. People often write-off punk musicians as pretty much just strumming along and making noise but the bass solo on Rancid's "Maxwell Murder" was probably what made me first pick up a bass when I was a teen.
Drums - Tony Hajjar
Not a well known name, right? Yes, I had to Google him. But then, if we went for drummers I didn't have to Google, we would be restricted to Phil Collins, Ringo Star, Travis Barker, John Bonham, Charlie Watts or Dave Grohl. Despite the fact that I didn't know his name, I have always felt that the drumming (and drum sounds) on At The Drive-In's album 'Relationship of Command' was nothing short of amazing.
Band leader - Gil Scott-Heron
With such a mixed bunch you would need someone to tie it all together and I think Gil would be the man, adding vocals and insights when needed and generally telling stories between (and sometimes during) songs. He should command enough respect from the rest of the band to be able to rein the egos in. And if any of the egos refuse to be reined in, then we can always look for another guitarist...
Dan Le Sac Vs Scroobius Pip play The Queen's Head Stage at Glastonbury on 27 June. Their album Logic Of Chance is out now.
