My Fantasy Band: Christopher Owens, Girls
Friday 16 September 2011
Drummer - Matt Hammer
He was the drummer in The Strange Boys until they fired him; I don't know why. But I saw him play one time and he was a cool guy. He held the sticks like an old-fashioned jazz player and was hunched over the snare drum staring at the other musicians. He never got phoney or put on a show; he was just very focused. He's the most stylish drummer I can recall.
Lead Guitar - Max Kakacek
Max is in Smith Westerns and he's the most dynamic lead guitarist I've seen. You know the way there used to be guitar gods? He's the only person in any band that behaves like that. Everything pompous that a lead guitar is supposed to be, he is.
Rhythm Guitar - Albert Hammond Jr
I like him a lot. He would also double up on leads so he could do that Thin Lizzy harmony stuff. He and Max would be great together, plus they both have curly hair which would add to the aesthetic.
Bass - Jim Barr
I saw Portishead's Roseland NYC Live performance and I was very impressed with their bass player. There was one song where he didn't start until halfway through the song. How a musician acts when they're on stage and not playing is the moment of truth. He was very intense, it was cool. He also does that English rock-guy thing of wearing adidas T-shirts, which I like.
Vocals - Justin Bieber
He's got a very good voice but he probably needs some help career-wise; he's getting tired. He could join this authentic, indie rock'n'roll band and do his R&B vocals. I really wanted him to sing a song on our new album called "Love Like a River". I sent him tweets about it but he didn't respond. Can you believe it? He'd have been so much better than me.
Girls' new album 'Father, Son, Holy Ghost' is out now. The band tour the UK from 8 November.
