Russell Brand made a bee-line for Noel Gallagher at a champagne reception before the Music Industry Trusts' awards in London on Monday night.

The pair hadn't seen each other for a while, so they were busy catching up at the Rink Bar at the Grosvenor House Hotel, along with Gallagher's long-term girlfriend Sara MacDonald.

Jonathan Ross, who was later honoured with an award by George Michael for nurturing new musical talent on his BBC1 show Friday Night with Jonathan Ross and his BBC Radio 2 show, arrived with his scarlet-haired wife, the screenwriter Jane Goldman.

Ross, a huge fan of Sparks, was pleasantly surprised to see brothers Russell and Ron Mael of the band at the reception.

Kelly Jones of the Stereophonics, who performed later in the evening (as did Bryan Ferry and The Noisettes), mingled with record producer Trevor Horn and guitarist Nile Rodgers of the American disco band Chic.

The comedian David Baddiel didn't arrive in time for drinks but headed straight into the awards ceremony in the hotel's Great Room, where he sat at Ross's table for a sit-down dinner, along with Brand. Ross not only left with an award but also with a signed David Bowie self-portrait, which he bid £20,000 for in the silent auction, while Gallagher won a mobile phone in the raffle.

When Ross collected his award he joked: "Wow, what a treat. George Michael, wow. I thought you were dead."
