Pop gigs of the week: Field Day & Apple Cart, Victoria Park, London E3
Two urban festivals in a similar rural spirit occupy Victoria Park this weekend.
Since offering indie-folk and alt-rock fruit in a village-fete style on its inception in 2007, Field Day has grown into a celebration of leftfield smarts, this year spearheaded by a resurgent Franz Ferdinand; supports include exuberant electro-hipster Grimes, noise-pop powerhouses Sleigh Bells, Friends, Metronomy, Django Django, Andrew Bird, Beirut, Toy and the Vaccines.
Sunday's Apple Cart offers a more mellow but equally marvellous mash of cabaret, kids' stuff and music, the lively line-up on the latter front including Noah and the Whale, Scritti Politti, Adam Ant, Billy Bragg, Beth Jeans Houghton and apocalypto-folkie Josh T Pearson.
While Pearson's dry wit should leaven his stormy story-songs, humour will also spill from Sean Lock, Phill Jupitus and the politicised-but-personable Josie Long. On all fronts, fine yields.
