New music to listen to this week: Sean Christopher

Bristol-based musician Sean Christopher is preparing to release his debut album Yonder on 11 May - ahead of that we wanted to give you a taster of what to expect.

After studying music production at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague and Codarts in Rotterdam, he began creating music for films and TV commercials. You can hear that visual quality in his work, with inspiration taken from movies and documentaries that have an impact on him.

He says of his song "Cherokee": "I saw a great movie a few years ago called ‘Embrace of the Serpent' about an intriguing collaboration between western scientists and a Native American shaman in search of a medicine. It inspired me to look into the history of the indigenous people of America and I found out about the 'Trail of Tears', the forced relocation of the Cherokee tribe from the Southeastern United States to the western areas, in which many suffered and died. This song is about that, from a Cherokee perspective."

What are you listening to at the moment?

Found out about Leif Vollebek not too long ago. Sounds great.

I have been listening to John Field lately as well. it doesn't have much to do with my music, but I like it a lot, and so does my dog Ollie.

What are your plans for 2018?

2018 is all about introducing my music to the world, so my missions are clear and simple: sharing my debut album and follow up with live shows!

What was the first gig you ever played and what’s been the best so far

The first ever gig as a singer/songwriter (I did many before as a drummer) was in an old pub on Queens Day back in The Hague, Holland. I remember I was quite nervous. I started a bit shaky but I soon noticed everybody was really drunk and there was an euphoric atmosphere anyway. I made the best of it, and let them sing along a lot.

The best one is yet to come, of course ;) But I have great memories of a show I did not too long ago at a place called Bi Nuu in Berlin.
