Still reelin' and rockin'

By Elisa Bray

John Lennon famously said: "If you tried to give rock and roll another name, you might call it 'Chuck Berry'."

And earlier this week the duckwalking rock'n'roll star from St Louis played Camden's Jazz Café at the ripe age of 82. His outfit – a red sequinned shirt and sailor's cap – belied his age, as did his performance, with the legendary guitarist prowling the stage as he sang numbers from his vast back catalogue, which includes "Johnny B Goode", "Roll Over Beethoven" and his No 1 hit "My Ding-a-Ling".

Berry was among the pioneers of rock music – he is pictured above when setting out in the Fifties – and one of the first stars to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame when it started in 1986. How many of today's stars will still be reelin' and rockin' after half a century in the biz?
